Does a dopamine detox work?

The short answer
Not the way the name says. You cannot detox from a neurotransmitter your brain makes continuously, and the psychologist who coined the phrase agrees: dopamine "is just a mechanism that explains how addictions can become reinforced, and makes for a catchy title". What has actually been measured is the cutting-out. A preregistered 2025 meta-analysis — ten studies, 4,674 participants, 38 effect sizes — found no significant effect of social media abstinence on positive affect, negative affect or life satisfaction, and no effect of how long the break lasted. The only trial to test both strategies against each other, on 619 people, found that cutting one hour a day beat quitting entirely for a week, with effects that held better four months later. Easing off does something. It is just not the abstinence that does it.
"Detox" implies a tank to drain. Dopamine is not one
The word is borrowed from the body: you detox from a substance that came in and has to go out. Dopamine never comes in. Your brain makes it, continuously, and uses it for a great many things that have nothing to do with the pleasure of a notification.
The second misunderstanding runs deeper, and it is the whole point. Kent Berridge and Terry Robinson proposed, a quarter of a century ago, that two things ordinary language treats as one should be pulled apart: wanting and liking. Their wording is exact — "wanting", a form of motivation, "is generated by large and robust neural systems that include mesolimbic dopamine", while "liking, or the actual pleasurable impact of reward consumption, is mediated by smaller and fragile neural systems, and is not dependent on dopamine".
What an addiction does, in their incentive-sensitization theory, is amplify the wanting — "especially triggered by cues" — without amplifying the liking to match. That is exactly what people describe when they cannot put the phone down: enormous pressure to open the app, and almost nothing once it is open. The authors note that the scope of the model is now "expanding to include diverse behavioral addictions".
So a dopamine detox aims at the wrong thing. Less dopamine is not less appetite for the thing eating your evening. It is less drive for everything.
The man who coined the term says he wasn't talking about dopamine
The phrase comes from the Californian psychologist Cameron Sepah, describing a method drawn from cognitive behavioural therapy: strip out the cues that set off impulsive behaviour. Asked about it by Harvard Health Publishing, the health publisher of Harvard Medical School, he was blunt — dopamine "is just a mechanism that explains how addictions can become reinforced, and makes for a catchy title".
The doctor reporting the quote, Peter Grinspoon, adds the sentence the name erased: dopamine "doesn't actually decrease when you avoid overstimulating activities, so a dopamine 'fast' doesn't actually lower your dopamine levels". The title outlived its instructions, and the title is what the videos copied.
What got measured is not dopamine — it is the break
A dopamine detox cannot be tested, because physiologically it does not mean anything. The concrete version people actually practise — going without social media for a few days — has been tested often, and the results contradicted each other enough that a Belgian team pooled them, registering their protocol in advance.
Their conclusion is careful and worth reading closely: the findings "suggest that temporarily stepping away from social media may not be the most optimal approach to enhance individual well-being, emphasizing the need for further research on alternative disconnection strategies". The authors flag important methodological differences between the studies themselves. This is not "breaks don't work". It is "the break alone does not produce the effect it is credited with".
Which changes the question. Not how many days you can hold out, but what goes in the gap.
One trial put cutting out against cutting down
This is the most useful study in the file, because it is the only one to test both strategies side by side. In Germany, 619 smartphone users were split three ways: 200 gave up their phone entirely for 7 days, 226 cut their daily use by one hour, and 193 changed nothing. They were measured at baseline, straight after, then 1 month and 4 months later.
Both interventions reduced use intensity, problematic use tendencies, depressive symptoms and anxiety symptoms; in both groups, life satisfaction and physical activity went up. But the detail that matters is elsewhere: "most effects were stronger and remained more stable over 4 months in the reduction group than in the abstinence group". Only the reduction group also smoked fewer cigarettes per day.
The authors' conclusion runs to seven words: "a complete smartphone abstinence is not necessary". One trial, on German volunteers not selected for any addiction, using self-report — that does not close the subject. But it is the only direct comparison that exists, and it leans towards sustainable restraint rather than heroic withdrawal.
What the NHS says, word for word
Where the NHS talks about dopamine, it is not on a page about screens: it is on the one about Parkinson's disease, and the description beats every diagram in every video. "Dopamine acts as a messenger between the parts of the brain and nervous system that help control and co-ordinate body movements." When the nerve cells producing it die or are damaged, "the amount of dopamine in the brain is reduced", and the result is not mental clarity: "the part of the brain controlling movement cannot work as well as normal, causing movements to become slow and abnormal." That is what falling dopamine actually looks like.
On the problem itself, the NHS offers a definition with no molecule and no reset in it: "Addiction is defined as not having control over doing, taking or using something to the point where it could be harmful to you." It covers what is not a substance — people who "may spend hours each day and night surfing the internet or gaming while neglecting other aspects" of their lives. And then comes the part no video includes: "Addiction is a treatable condition. Whatever the addiction, there are lots of ways you can seek help."
What survives once you drop the word
What Sepah described was not a purge, it was stimulus control: acting on what sets the behaviour off, rather than on how you feel once it has. Three moves stand up without any mythology.
- Aim at a number, not at zeroIt is the only target that has beaten anything in a trial: one hour less per day, still holding four months later. An absolute zero breaks once and takes everything with it; a number survives a bad evening.
- Remove the cue before the urgeBerridge and Robinson's wanting is "especially triggered by cues" — which is the practical part of the theory. The cue is a place, a time, an object within reach, and it is the one thing you can change while calm rather than while craving.
- Occupy your head for three minutesAn urge is first a mental image, and a mental image fades if you load the same machinery. Tested in the field: 31 participants prompted 7 times a day for a week, 3 minutes of Tetris, 13.9 points lower out of 100 — across all cravings pooled, drugs, food and activities ("sex, exercise, gaming") in one model, with a modest effect size (f² = 0.11). The mechanism is unpacked in what a craving actually feels like.
If you really do stop, the change takes months
Human measurements of dopamine recovery after abstinence do exist. The timescale is simply nothing like a weekend. In Nora Volkow's reference study, five people dependent on methamphetamine were scanned by PET once at under six months without the drug, then again between 12 and 17 months: their dopamine transporters had risen by 19% in the caudate and 16% in the putamen. The authors add that neuropsychological test performance did not improve to the same extent, which suggests the rise "was not sufficient for complete function recovery".
Five people, a neurotoxic drug, more than a year. That is the going rate for a real shift in a human dopamine marker. Nothing in that inverts itself in 72 hours, and nothing in it has been measured in someone who deleted an app.

Questions people ask
How long should a dopamine detox last?
No length has beaten any other, and that is a finding rather than a gap. The 2025 meta-analysis tested duration directly: "Relationships between social media abstinence duration and the three outcomes were also non-significant." The 24 hours, 48 hours and one week you see online come from no validated protocol. The only number that has beaten anything in a trial is one hour less per day, kept up over months.
Do my receptors reset after 30 days?
Nobody has shown that for screens. What can be measured in humans comes from drug addiction, and the timescale is nothing like a month: in Nora Volkow's study, five people dependent on methamphetamine were scanned once at under six months of abstinence and again at 12 to 17 months, when their dopamine transporters had risen by 19% in the caudate and 16% in the putamen. The authors add that neuropsychological performance did not improve to the same extent, suggesting the increase "was not sufficient for complete function recovery". Four weeks off an app is not that, and has never been measured as that.
So a dopamine detox is useless?
The word is useless. The behaviour underneath has been measured — and it does better in its moderate version. Can it be harmful?
The extreme versions can. The 2024 literature review in Cureus is blunt: "extreme forms of dopamine fasting can lead to feelings of loneliness, anxiety, and malnutrition, which can have detrimental effects on mental and physical health." Isolating yourself, skipping meals or avoiding people in the name of a brain reset means giving up healthy things on the strength of a badly chosen word. And if the loss of control is real, the answer is not an internet challenge: the NHS is clear that "addiction is a treatable condition", starting with your GP. Does this apply to gaming, scrolling, short-form video?
The measurements are on social media and smartphone use, not on each habit taken separately — that is the honest limit of everything above. What is settled is the framing: the NHS counts as addiction the pattern of people who "may spend hours each day and night surfing the internet or gaming while neglecting other aspects" of their lives. The test is never the number of hours. It is the loss of control — "not having control over doing, taking or using something to the point where it could be harmful to you".
Isn't dopamine the pleasure chemical?
No, and that error is the root of the whole misunderstanding. Berridge and Robinson, the two researchers who pulled the concepts apart, put it like this: "wanting", a form of motivation, "is generated by large and robust neural systems that include mesolimbic dopamine", while "liking, or the actual pleasurable impact of reward consumption, is mediated by smaller and fragile neural systems, and is not dependent on dopamine". Less dopamine does not mean less pleasure. It means less drive.
